Discover the unique new strawberry spirit!

We all love strawberries, but what’s the story behind them? And where do they come from? Today, we are most familiar with the “garden strawberry”, a commonly grown hybrid species of the genus Fragaria.

This juicy, sweet, and familiar berry was first cultivated in Brittany, France, in the 1750s, from a cross between Fragaria virginiana from North America and Fragaria chiloensis, brought from Chile by Amédée-François Frézier in 1714. In 2017, 9.2 million tonnes of strawberries were produced globally and, believe it or not, China accounted for 40% of that total.

However, Fragaria has been around long before it became a garden favourite. Ancient Roman texts describe the medicinal use of these fruits. Furthermore, during the 14th century, French texts mention strawberries and their cultivation in people’s gardens.

In England, the now-famous combination of strawberries and cream was invented in 1578 by Thomas Wolsey during the reign of King Henry VIII. By the end of the 16th century, three European species of strawberry were recorded.

Today, the garden strawberry is the most common, although strawberry varieties vary widely. Size, shape, fertility, sweetness, colour, and taste all vary from one variety to another. The berries grown in northwestern Greece, specifically, in Florina, are tiny and sweet, with a strong aroma. They are also rich in nutrients with antioxidant properties.

Harvesting and distillation alike are done with great care. This means that each berry is individually hand-picked, washed, and sorted before each fermentation. They are lightly crushed, and the seeds and resulting pulp are used for a range of skin products thanks to their rich, natural benefits. Nothing goes to waste!
